Vladimir Kramnik Denies Misconduct in Passing of American Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky

The former world champion has broken his silence after the tragic passing of American grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky, describing the 29-year-old's loss as a tragedy while condemning critics for launching what he termed an "deeply cynical and illegal targeted harassment" against him and his loved ones.

Kramnik's Statement

The 50-year-old former world champion, who has faced widespread condemnation for accusing Naroditsky of digital foul play lacking proof, offered sympathies but rejected any personal attacks.

"Despite the tensions, I was the only person in the chess community who, noticing on video Daniel's obvious health issues a day before his death, publicly called for him to receive help," Kramnik stated. "The ensuing efforts, right after his passing, to explicitly connect this tragic event to my name … violate every limit of fundamental human decency."

Kramnik said his earlier calls for a review of Naroditsky's online play had been ignored "despite a significant amount of evidence", and claimed he would submit documentation to "any relevant authority". He noted his lawyers were drafting legal actions over "false accusations" that have resulted in dangers against him and his family.

Investigation Details

The death of Naroditsky may have been the result of a drug overdose and is being investigated as a possible suicide, according to a law enforcement document issued last Thursday. A report from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department says Naroditsky was found dead Sunday evening and classifies the case as a "Death/suicide/overdose/Sudden/Natural Death Investigation."

"On Sunday October 19th at around 7:11 PM, officers answered an emergency medical request in the area of 9000 Colin Crossing," the document states. "Upon arrival, an unresponsive subject was located and later pronounced deceased by a medic."

Chess World Response

Outrage regarding Kramnik's conduct has shaken the chess world. Grandmaster Nakamura described his actions "appalling", while reigning champion Carlsen labeled it "terrible". GM from India Nihal Sarin, who faced Naroditsky in his final online match, blamed Kramnik for "taking a life", saying his self-appointed pursuit against alleged rule-breakers was fruitless and "completely unacceptable".

Naroditsky's Legacy

A Stanford-educated prodigy and ex-youth titleholder, Naroditsky amassed over 800,000 followers on streaming platforms. Referred to as Danya, he was celebrated for his humor, clarity and humility, becoming a leading voice in chess's COVID-period surge. He was also one of the world's finest players under rapid formats, finishing ninth at last year's blitz world championship in New York.

Naroditsky consistently denied the accusations but acknowledged the toll they had taken on his mental health. "Ever since the Kramnik stuff, I feel like if I start doing well, people suspect foul play," Naroditsky remarked in his final livestream.

Organizational Statements

The International Chess Federation (Fide) announced recently it was "investigating" Kramnik's actions. "The way Kramnik approaches it simply is unacceptable," Fide CEO Emil Sutovsky commented. The federation intends to commemorate Naroditsky with a tribute prize.

Fide president Arkady Dvorkovich later confirmed that all of Kramnik's official remarks about Naroditsky, before and after his death, would be submitted to the federation's disciplinary body "to be reviewed independently".

"Human life and dignity are fundamental values shared by all of us," Dvorkovich emphasized. "The chess community has long respected the achievements of GM Vladimir Kramnik, but such stature brings a duty to maintain the standards of fairness and respect."

Loved Ones' Wish

Naroditsky's family have said they hope he is recalled not because of the hostility he endured but for "the happiness and motivation he brought people every day". Carlsen called him "an asset to chess", while Hikaru Nakamura referred to him as "the best of us".
