The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not just his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
