Elden Ring's Rolling Dodge Warrants Praise

If you've played this acclaimed title, or nearly any action-adventure title, you're probably familiar with the wonderful mechanic called the “dodge roll.” This avoidance maneuver allows your character to carry out a forward, sideways, or backward ground roll to dodge incoming harm and gain space from opponents. Appears practical, doesn't it?

The evasion roll, though, has received plenty of criticism, and not just because of the rolling; it's been labeled dumb, a cop-out, and an unbelievable technique — and sometimes, I concur. Just imagine me rolling around hostile mobs in another popular RPG — untouchable! But Elden Ring's evasion move stands as the roll to top all dodge rolls dodge rolls, and I'll tell you why.

For this particular game, the designers identified an excellent method to counter all sentiments suggesting the technique is not challenging enough: merely bestow every enemy unreasonable strength, multiply it, and all heroes who ventures close them will be eternally grateful because of their evasion move, myself included. With so much on the line, evading successfully seems like an accomplishment, not a cheat.

No different defensive move in Elden Ring comes close to this level of gratification and reliability, since rapid sprints provide minimal movement and guard stances are easily broken by powerful foes. Someone once recommended leaping as the primary Elden Ring evasion method, but aside from not providing ideal movement, It wasn't clear to me taking a crushing hit could enhance my odds of beating enemies (lack of skill, maybe).

Perfecting the Skill

While the rolling dodge grants reprieve in an incredibly challenging experience, it isn't without skill. Firstly, Elden Ring's rolling dodge only triggers a frame of protection after you stop pressing the dodge button, which hinders a rapid, fearful withdrawal from perilous circumstances. Additionally, while it might transport you away from enemies, it's much better to use it as an opportunity to advance, optimally at their back, and land some hits. Lastly, you must still grasp and foresee opponent moves, because rolling prematurely of a prolonged preparation could conclude your immunity ahead of the attack striking… causing significant harm.

A Well-Designed Feature

Although evasion-rolling in quick succession might seem rather absurd (kudos to the Witcher anew), this isn't practically possible in the game. Certainly, that still doesn't make it a believable combat move — which is precisely why it would be pure horror to witness it in a title like Kingdom Come: Deliverance — but this is a spectacular magical game under discussion, so who cares?

Similar to any respectable dodge roll, Elden Ring's evasion sequence is enhanced with a brief tumbling leap at the start, offering a lively impression rather than plopping the player on the floor. Depending on your gear, the move can feel extremely nimble or relatively slow, but it remains faster and more fluid than the evasion moves found in the earlier games. Admittedly, you may embed your large weapon on the floor when wielding such equipment, but that's your responsibility for not just playing a crossbow (I'm joking — avoid using the game with a crossbow).

The Perfect Balance

This title's avoidance feature creates the perfect balance between challenge and opportunity, providing prospects of success while risking the loss of that hope at the smallest error. Master this technique, and you'll obtain not only success, but fulfillment.
