The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential further challenges.
